Infirmary Street, Edinburgh EH1 1LT
Edinburgh Royal Infirmary moved to this site in 1741. The old Infirmary, which first opened its doors in the nearby Robertson’s Close in 1729, had only four beds, quite inadequate for the city’s needs. The new hospital was granted patronage and a charter by King George II and had 228 beds. Over the decades the Infirmary grew to occupy most of the land between Infirmary Street and Drummond Street. By the 1860s the hospital was again proving inadequate and plans were made to move the hospital to Lauriston Place in 1879.

Many thanks for your enquiry. I’m sorry to say we don’t actually offer ‘live’ tours. The Curious Edinburgh website and app were developed as part of a cultural engagement project at Science, Technology and Innovation Studies at the University of Edinburgh. The idea of the app was that people could go on self-guided tours, using the information and maps to navigate around the different places of interest. You will find links to the versions of the app for iPhone and Android devices on the home page of the website. If you would prefer to have a paper version, I would be happy to send you a pdf of a slightly shorter history of medicine tour that we produced as part of the induction pack for new medical students.
